Today on the podcast, we have the honor of bringing you Michelle Garcia, the editorial manager of NBC BLK, a division of NBC News that covers news and information focusing on Black Americans. Before that, she was an editor at Vice, Out magazine, Vox, Mic.com, and The Advocate magazine.
Over the last decade Michelle has covered major social movements across the U.S. including the fight for marriage equality, #MeToo, and the Movement for Black Lives, to name a few. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband, toddler, and the best dog on the planet.
SUMMARY //
Michelle Garcia starts off talking to Amanda + Kristin about her early years of creativity, how her mom introduced her to collage and her dad gave her her first journal.
Michelle talks about how the inspiration for her latest NY Times article entitled Scrapbooking is an Act of “Radical Self-Care” came about from a twitter post, and how she wanted to do the story in a way that she thought was responsible. She wanted to make it a point to differentiate between the scrapbooking community and the industry.
Michelle chats with girls about how black women are very familiar with the emotional labor it takes to navigate white spaces, including the scrapbooking industry, and how NOT incorporating diverse groups and point of views into the fold is losing out on the rich tapestry that is America.
Michelle talks to A + K about how scrapbooking and journalism are similar, what personal projects she’s working on, and how she ties resilience to her ancestors.
